Design inspiration: Pristine, crystal blue waters fed by melted snowfall from the Southern Alps meander through wide banks of stone and sand as the Rakaia River winds its way through the Canterbury Plains to the Pacific Ocean. One of New Zealand's largest braided rivers and famous for its Salmon and Trout fishing. The blue stripe epotomises the purity of the blue coloured river.
The Rakaia River was known to the Maori people as O Rakaia which means 'the place where people were ranged in rank'. At the mouth of the river many Maori earth ovens have been discovered which were used for cooking Moa. Over 1000 oven sites have been recorded in this area which indicates large scale specialised moa-hunting for food supplies was carried out here.
